What is therapy

About Therapy.

Typically people come to counseling struggling with a particular feeling, relationship, or problem that they feel they cannot escape no matter what they do.  Often we believe that if we could just change that one thing, stop feeling that feeling, or figure out a way to get that one person to stop doing that, our feelings would shift and our problems would fade.  We invest endless amounts of energy and time in these pursuits yet are often left feeling disappointed, hopeless, exhausted, lonely, anxious, and still struggling with the same old thing.  Why??

The Story Behind Our Struggles.

Research in psychology and neuroscience show us that our struggles in life are typically about far more than they appear on the surface.  Often the problems of our present are deeply rooted in our pasts.  From the moment we are born we begin to learn about life from our families, our cultures, and our own formative experiences.  Questions about how relationships work, what all of these crazy sensations in our bodies mean, and when its ok to feel are being answered before we can even talk, walk, or remember.  All of our experiences, the good, the bad, and the ugly, intertwine inside our minds, bodies, and brains forming a unique and very personal map of how the world works and what we must do to survive.  As adults we are often unaware of the learned assumptions that quietly govern our lives, even when these lessons get in our way, limit our relationships, or perpetuate anxiety and depression.

How Therapy Can Help.

I see therapy as the slow and steady untangling of the many maps that you have created throughout your lifetime as an individual and/or couple.  I strive to create a caring, playful, and judgment free space where you can begin to explore why you feel the things you feel, why you do the things you do, and why you long for the things you desire.  As we discover, process, and grieve the lessons of the past that no longer serve you, you will begin to find the space and freedom to create a new map in your mind.  Together we will work to create new pathways in your brain and relationships that are based on your authentic adult self, rather than the ghosts of your past.  It is my hope that therapy will not only release you from the particular problem you entered with but will allow you to feel more whole, enlivened, and resilient in everything you do.
